Waka Ama

I wouldn't want to be in a Waka Ama race because I could fall out of the Waka and hurt myself. Or I could hit myself with the paddle. I also need to be in very good shape for the races.

My name is Rachel and I am working with Jordan and Cadence on the Summer Learning Journey blogging programme. It's great to see that you have had time to post another activity this week.

I can completely understand why you would be worried about competing in a Waka Ama race. You would have to be very fit and quite strong, I reckon, to be able to paddle such a large boat across the open water. When I was a young girl growing up in Canada I learned how to paddle a canoe. Canoes are much smaller than wakas (they usually have only 2-3 people in them) and I found that challenging enough!

Do you think that you might like to try paddling a canoe rather than a waka? They are pretty stable. I have never fallen out of a canoe, even though my dad would sometimes rock the boat back and forth a little bit when we were paddling. I think that he was trying to prove to me that we weren't going to fall out...

Speaking of family, I hope that you are walking a nice summer holiday with your whanau. My whole family lives in Canada so I am going to take some time later today to Skype with them for Christmas. Apparently it is -25 degrees in Ottawa today and there is snow all over the ground. It's going to be a very white Christmas - my favourite kind!

  3. Kia Ora Isla,

Ka pai on completing a bonus activity!!! You do need a lot of strength for paddling, but do you think it could be easier with lots of people on your team?

Have a look in the picture for the activity, how many people would be in the boat with you? I would feel much more comfortable having a strong team in a Waka Ama race, would you?

    Keep up the fantastic blogging!

    Cadence :)
